James Monroe, 1818

James Monroe (1818-1898) was Albion’s first industrialist and opened the “Albion Iron Works” in 1846. The firm manufactured agricultural implements. Monroe later served as sheriff of Calhoun County, and as Mayor of Kalamazoo.
