William V. Morrison, 1817

In the fall of 1839, William V. Morrison became the fourth teacher at the Little RedSchoolhouse. Morrison was a well known figure in the 19th century, who became partner with Jesse Crowell in the firm of Jesse Crowell & Company. A staunch “Copper-head” Democrat, Morrison was outspoken politically, and gave free expression of his convictions. A “Copperhead” is a Democrat who sympathized with the South during the Civil War. Morrison was a member of the Constitutional convention which framed Michigan’s constitution in 1850, and it is said he authored the clause which barred college students from gaining a residence whereby they would be entitled to vote.
